SHIPPEY, FREDERICK A.

(1909-1994) James Pearsall Professor of the Sociology of Religion, Drew University, where he taught from 1950 to 1975. First editor of the Review of Religious Research (1959-1964). United Methodist minister, member of the staff of the home division of the board of missions of that body from 1944 to 1953, where he established a department of research and surveys. Known for his work in church planning and location and the relationship between community dynamics and religious life, epitomized in his books Church Work in the City (Abingdon 1952) and Protestantism in Suburban Life (Abingdon 1964). His work is archived at Drew, where the Shippey Lectureship in the Sociology of Christianity is given in his honor.
